1916 Centenary & Glenwood Ambush Commemoration

Kilkishen Cultural Centre was the venue for a 1916 Commemorative Lecture by Dr Thomás Mac Conmara on Friday Jan 15th.  This lecture gave a background to the 1916 rising and its aftermath to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the rising.  It was followed by the showing of the film Mise Eire which is in in black and white. This film also portrays events associated with the rising. The evening was organised by the local Glenwood Memorial Committee.

On Sunday Jan 17th there was an event at the Glenwood Ambush Memorial site in Belvoir to commemorate the 100 anniversary of the 1916 rising and also the 95th anniversary of the Glenwood Ambush. In the lead up to this wording was added to the memorial to show appreciation for the contribution made by Cumann na mBan in the lead up to and during the rising and the subsequent war of independence. 2 plaques were also installed which are the 1916 Proclamation and a song composed by the late Denis Donnellan RIP depicting the ambush as related to him by elder people.  The Cumann na mBan inscription and the 2 plaques were unveiled at a special ceremony in Glenwood on Sunday Jan 17th.
