Lord and Lady of Kilkishen

John Torpey & Olivia King Lord & Lady of Kilkishen

Update (October 22nd): On Saturday night last, the Grand Finale of the Lord & Lady of Kilkishen competition took place in the village.  The event commenced with a parade of the candidates through the village led by a lone piper to the courtyard adjacent to Jack’s Place which had been specially decorated for the occasion.  There the candidates were greeted by the town cryer & a musical fanfare.  A large number of people turned out on the night to witness the conferring of the titles.  The event was a huge success & overall the competition raised a staggering €19,000 for the Church of Ireland Restoration Project.  The winners of the over all title of Lord & Lady of Kilkishen were John Torpey & Olivia King – pictured here with their scrolls.  They were conferred with their titles by Timothy O’Connell Esquire of Newmarket on Fergus.

Update (July 17th): The campaign to elect a lord and Lady of Kilkishen is now beginning to burn some rubber with a number of events planned by the competing candidates in the coming weeks. On this Friday evening July 20th Mary and Kearon are holding a Texas Holdem Poker Classic in Gleeson’s Bars from 8pm. The entry fee is €20 and the prize money on the night will be pro rata. Gogo and Martina are currently selling patches in a local field and the skill here is picking the patch where Suzie the Cow will do her droppings. This event will take place on August 5th and will include a BBQ in Donnellans Bar plus a craic session. On Saturday August 18th Emmet and Cushla are organising a 6k Fancy Dress Fun Run, Walk and Cycle and Sponsorship Cards for this event can be had by giving Emmet a ring at 087 2680316. While its listed as a Fancy Dress the attire is optional. This will be followed by a music session and BBQ in Gleeson’s immediately after the event. Then from Aug 20th to 22nd inclusive there is a Sizzling Summer Seniors Golf Tournament in East Clare Golf Club in the campaign supporting John and Olivia. Fortunately or unfortunately you must be fifty plus to participate and the entry fee is €120 per team of 4 players or €30 each. To register your team give Mike Whelan of East Clare Golf Club a ring at 087 6458039 or contact Olivia or John directly. Further events are planned by the competing candidates before the closing date of Sunday Sept 30th to get them past the winning post. The bookies favourites are John and Olivia due mostly to the widespread popularity of Johns business Torpey Hurleys. However the heavy betting in the past week is with Kearon and Mary because of their successful Draw for the trailer load of firewood and their plans to hold an XFactor Talent Competition and a Night at the Dogs in the Limerick Greyhound Track in September. Of course Joe O’Gorman was not nicknamed Gogo for nothing and in partnership with Martina McNamara its not beyond the bounds of expectation that this duo could be the dark horses in the race. Martina is very popular in UL and Joe is well known in Farming and GAA circles. The campaign of Emmet and Cushla has received what could be termed as a timely boost with Cushla on a secret mission to India. Its believed that she has some meetings planned there and if Oil Sheiks are involved then the race could be over much sooner that expected.

Update (July 5th): The campaign to find out who will succeed in being elected Lord and Lady of Kilkishen is now picking up momentum with a number of events planned by the candidates in the coming months. The next event is Kilkishen XFactor, organised by Kearon Fox and Mary Murphy, and registration for this competition takes place at a number of East Clare venues from Wednesday July 11th. They are also making arrangements for a Texas Holdem Poker Classic in Gleeson Pub on Friday July 20th.

Joe O’Gorman and Martina McNamara currently have an event up and running which is estimating where a Cow will do her droppings when introduced to a green field that has been marked out in one metre squares. The field in question is in the centre of the village and was the site for the famous marquees in the 1970s. One metre patches are now on sale in all the local shops and the famous drop will take place at some time on Sunday August 5th . While people are waiting in expectation a BBQ and a bit of crack are being organised.

Emmet O’Mahony and Chushla Brid Hehir are holding a  Fancy Dress 6k run, walk or cycle on Saturday August 11th and a Table Quiz on Friday August 31st .

John Torpey and Olivia King who have kept a very low profile is the campaign so far are finalising plans for a Golf Classic on Monday August 20th to Wednesday August 22nd inclusive.

The election campaign ends on Sunday September 30th at 12 midnight and will be followed by a special function in October to announce the winners.

Update (June18th): The campaign in Kilkishen to elect a Lord and Lady got underway in earnest on Saturday evening last (June 9th) when the candidacy of Kearon Fox and Mary Murphy staged a very enjoyable skittles competition in Gleesons Patio. The winner of the Junior competition for U/15s was Conor Henry. The Senior competition went to as play-off among the six players who had recorded scores in excess of twenty points. This resulted in Paddy Ryan Scart and Brendan McMahon New Park leading the field and they ended level in a head to head play-off so they decided to share the prize-money. Kearon and Mary are letting no grass grow under their feet in the campaign as their next fundraiser is a raffle for a trailer load of timber sponsored by John Cannon McMahon. Then on the first week of August they are making plans to hold a Texas Holdem Poker Classic in Jacks Place.

The contest to find the new Lord and Lady of Kilkishen has begun. Four groups of aspiring Lords and Ladies will work in their teams of two to come up with very different fundraising events and activities to raise money for The Kilkishen Church Restoration Project. The teams will have now until September to raise money, and the team that raises the most money for the church project within that timeframe will be appointed Lord and Lady of Kilkishen in a special ceremony.

The candidates are Joe O’Gorman from Cragg and Martina McNamara from Killanena Kilkishen; Kearon Fox of Dun an Oir and Mary Murphy of Main Street, Kilkishen; John Torpey of Belvior and Olivia King of Cluain na Laoi and Emmet O’Mahony, Killanena Kilkishen and Cushla Hehir of Cluain na Laoi.
